Network Management and Integration

CASCADE includes a large number of partners and the task of integration and coordination of all activities is a prerequisite for success of the network. This platform consists of four work packages:

WP1- Management Activities

The main objectives are to:

·         guarantee a functional and durable network structure

·         to ensure communication with the European Commission

·         to provide assistance and advice to CASCADE partners

·         to identify and submit competitive proposals for

          additional funding

The different WP1 tasks are shared by the CASCADE coordinator, the Work Management Group and the Network Office. The coordinator, Jan-Åke Gustafsson, is responsible for all strategic and scientific decisions. He is supported by the Work Management Group, in which six CASCADE partners are represented. The Network Office supports the coordinator and partners in all administrative and practical issues, such as scientific and financial reporting.

WP2 - Development of Integration Tools

CASCADE has establishing different tools to promote and support integration activities. For example, the Intranet, is an online common workplace, with access to documents, researcher profiles, newsletters, video conferencing and a

database with available research tools (WP7).

In general, integration among CASCADE partners is reflected through many activities, such as researcher exchanges, cross-disciplinary teaching activities and workshops. The common goal is to maximize scientific output by enhancing collaboration within the network but also with other European research projects. The ALLIANCE cluster is one example of a successful collaboration with with five other FP6 projects (PIONEER, CRESCENDO, EWA, ATHON, CAESAR).

WP7 - Database

CASCADE has developed a user-friendly web-based database which contains information on plasmids, animal models, advanced equipment and specific techniques available in CASCADE laboratories. The user has several options to search but also to add new information and to directly order the material of interest. The database has become an important tool for facilitating scientific collaboration between CASCADE partners and is continuously under development.

WP9 - Review of CASCADE Progress

The aims of this WP are to perform thorough reviews of different network activities and to identify areas that may require further development. For this purpose external reviewers are assigned which annually survey all CASCADE network activities. The suggestions from reviewers are taken into account when planning future work.
