Final report on the future of NoEs

CASCADE was one of the NoEs invited to provide inputs to the NoE Expert Group. The NoE Expert Group has performed an extensive evaluation of the networks as instruments to strengthen Europe’s scientific impact.

This review was prompted by CASCADE, via the “Support research NoEs” campaign. This campaign raised the issue of the uncertain future of the Network of Excellences (NoEs) resulted in an Open Forum in November 2007, with a subsequent joint Opinion Paper signed by 60 Networks of Excellence, and a lunch debate in the Parliament in February 2008: the latter one hosted by MEP Prof Jerzy Buzek.

An Expert Group was appointed to perform an efficiency review of the networks. The goal was to evaluate the networks as instruments to strengthen Europe's scientific impact. CASCADE was one of the NoEs invited to provide input to this evaluation.

The review contains seven key recommendations. CASCADE has taken these recommendations on board and works to assure an extension of CASCADE and to consolidate the future of the Networks of Excellence.

Further evaluated
In addition, CASCADE was one of the Networks of Excellence (NoEs) to be reviewed in an evaluation process initiated by DG Research. The aim was to evaluate the impact of the Networks of Excellence funded under the two first calls in FP6 for the theme “Food quality and safety”. The revision was concluded in an “interim report” finished late 2008. This report will be used to priority between research projects in FOOD.

CASCADE very much welcome these reviews as opportunities to show what a durable, well-structured and innovative network CASCADE is, but also as an option for us to further strengthen and deepen our network.
