The Medical School of the University of Pécs exists of 24 Basic Science Departments and 27 Clinical Departments. One of the Basic Science Departments is the Department of Pathophysiology and Gerontology.

Within the Department of Pathophysiology and Gerontology the Endocrine Group’s research focus - in collaboration with other departments and clinics – on the “Role of macrophage migration inhibitor factor (MIF) in inflammation”, “The effects of estrogens, phytoestrogens and dietary polyphenolic compounds in inflammatory models of arthritis, lung inflammation or on obstetrical inflammatory states” and “Environmental endocrine disruptor molecules in the human body”. These studies are also supported by national ETT, GVOP and the international CASCADE NoE grants.

Contribution to CASCADE

We had the opportunity to establish a CASCADE NoE PhD position to perform substantial tasks in CASCADE’s Hungarian Mother’s Milk program in collaboration with CASCADE Partners 1B (leader: Helen Håkansson) and 11 (leader: Emilio Benfenati). The study concerns probabilistic risk assessment of babies’ exposure to PCBs and TCDDs through mothers’ milk. We have completed sample collection and chemical analysis, and are currently in the phase of statistical assessment and manuscript preparation.
